Volunteer

This year I did some volunteer work, such as be the book keeper for XinHua book store, and I also did volunteer work which is to be the guide for Danish students for my school.

Be the guide for Danish student is very interesting. The Danish students are very friendly and polite. I welcomed two boys named Martin and Radish with my partner. They are very interested in China, especially about Chinese culture and Chinese history. Both of them are very good talker, so do I. We all really enjoy the conversation. I told them a lot of story about Chinese history and some Chinese fairy tales. I told them the story about Chang E, and they also told us some Danish fairy tales. Denmark is “The home of fairy tales”, so the Danish students knew lots of them. I am very happy to hear those stories. Then I led them to visit my school which is large and good. I showed them the cafeteria, the gym, and the dormitory. Afterwards we went to the vegetable market which is near our school. They seem feeling very curious about the market because it is different from the western vegetable market. They took some photos in the market. At lunch time, we went to one of the Swiss restaurants in Xin Jiekou and had lunch there. The dishes were great, we all enjoy the dishes, and it was a happy time. After lunch I took Radish go back to school to play soccer. He is a good player. Other people in my group took Martin to the post office to buy stamps because they want to send postcard to their family.

This activity led me learned about Denmark, and also practiced my English. I hope there will be more activities like that.

I also did some volunteer work as the teacher of Grade 5 children; our teacher let me teach them some English words about cards, such as diamonds, hearts, spades, and clubs. Those students are very smart, they learned them very quickly. They told me they start learning English from grade 1!! Then I play UNO with them. They are very happy about it. We have a great time with each other. Those children are very cute, good. And teach them is very fun for me. That can help me know what a teacher should do for his/her students.

Volunteer work experience

Today I just finished my volunteer work. I have been working in Ju Feng billiard hall for ten days. My job is set up the balls for the customers. That looks very easy. When the manager of the billiard hall told me that is my job, I am thinking, “wow, that’s easy job. I can do it without any help!” Then the manager taught me how to set up the ball, “the entire billiard was divided into two types, one is all ball in the same color, another is half white, half in color, and when you set up the balls you have to make sure the balls in the three corners of the triangle should be same, and the tapes of any two balls that beside each other should be different.”

I start working, this billiard hall is very famous in that area, so there are a lot of customers in the billiard hall. So all the staffs are very busy, the first customer that I serviced is two students, if I am telling the truth both of them are not good players, I started setting up the balls for them, I quickly put all the balls into triangle tool, then I started organize them, but I met a big problem!! The problem is I can not set up the balls follow the rule. I can not let any two balls beside each other be different types. I use 2 minutes, but I still can’t set it up currently, the students starting angry at me, fortunately, another staff come and help me. He only uses 15 seconds to set up the balls. I was shocked.

I asked this staff how can he do this, and his answer is “practice makes perfect!” then I knew I have to practice. After 20 minutes, I think I got it, I think I can do it now. So I set balls up for another customer, this time I got success, I set up it in 30 second, what a success!! I am very happy about it. The customers also feel surprise, their asked me why I am here, so I said to them, “I am a student in GCA, and I have to do 10 hours volunteer work for my portfolio.” They think that is a good idea, we need this kind of experience for our life!

I have learned a lot in these ten days, the most important things is “practice makes perfect”, in our life, nothing is easy, and you have to put effort into it. When you have done it you will feel very pride for yourself, so trust me, do what you need, never give up! Put all your effort in, you will get success!!

I have to say, “thank you!” to this volunteer work, because it taught me a lot!!
