Yesterday, I listened to a speech, the professor called Zhao Bin who is the person that made the speech, he thinks Chinese gardens design is very good, especially Su Zhou gardens. Su Zhou gardens have a long history, when you go into one of the Su Zhou gardens, you will feel another culture. When you stand outside of Su Zhou gardens, you are in the modern world, but at the moment when you go into the gardens, suddenly you go back to old world, you can go past Tang Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, and Qing Dynasty.
Chinese garden designer think symmetrical is the most important things when you design a garden, so a lot of Chinese gardens are symmetrical. Also the garden designer thinks use some big rocks to build a rockery can make the gardens looks more charming. When you put rocks together, you should put the bigger one on the top make it looks dangerous, the professor think danger can shock people, and Su Zhou has a lot of creeks, so every garden must has an area of water, the designer should have the kind of ability that can make a small area of lake can looks huge, he said if you make the diagonal looks longer, people will feel the area is bigger. There are some characteristics of Su Zhou garden:(1) The freehand Style of Landscape Painting as the Guiding Principle of Gardening. (2)Comfortable Dwelling Conditions and Excellent Living Environments (3)Rich Contents of Social Culture An important feature of the Suzhou classical gardens is that, as products of historical culture, they carry information on Chinese traditional ideology and culture. The Zhuozheng,Liu and Wangshi gardens and Huanxiu Mountain Villa embody fully the national features and artistic attainments of ancient Chinese gardening. Within the limited spaces they took up, their builders applied ingeniously various skills and means, such as contrast, foil, size alteration, structural gradation, juxtapose, scene-borrowing, representing rich contents in a small form and making the less excel the more, and combined halls, tower, pavilions and terraces with springs, rockeries, trees and flowers in imitation of natural landscapes, creating and ideal world with "urban mounts and forests" and "natural beauty amid the bustle of city life."That's why I like Su Zhou garden.
